El Rosario, Baja California, Mexico - On Friday, the Mexican National Defense Secretary (Sedena) confirmed that the 300 acres of marijuana plants growing in the desert were cultivated by members of the Sinaloa Cartel. The Sinaloa Cartel is operated by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera.
About 200 soldiers began burning 120 tons of marijuana plants on Friday near El Rosario in the municipality of Ensenada. To date, 58 people believed to have been working in the plantation have been arrested. Six of the suspects arrested have confessed to working for the Sinaloa Cartel. The plantation has been considered the largest ever discovered in the state of Baja California and in the country, according to Sedena.
On Thursday, Mexican Army General Alfonso Duarte Mujica first reported that military personnel discovered 300 acres of marijuana plants growing in the desert. A military plane patrolling the zone came upon a large area in the desert that was covered with a black screen-cloth. Ground soldiers on Tuesday went in to investigate the suspicious area and found the marijuana growing.
General Duarte Mujica said, that the military operation involved 300 military personnel. 16 men working at the plantation had been arrested earlier in the week nearby El Rosario as they tried to escape in a bus. The men are originally from the state of Sinaloa and several had confessed that they worked at the plantation. At least, 60 people worked to maintain the huge plantation and attempted to hid the marijuana plants among tomatoes.
Soldiers found an electric power plant source and water for irrigation came from two water holes. Water was pumped through pipes and gutters into the plantation.
Duarte Mujica estimated that the plantation had about 120 tons of marijuana growing worth about $1,800 million pesos ($150 million U.S.).
The plantation was located between the city of El Rosario and Cataviña, about 223 miles South of Tijuana.
