Egidio Torre Cantú, 53, elected Governor of Tamaulipas
On Saturday, suspected Zeta member Ismael Marino Ortega Galicia who worked as an escort and bodyguard for Governor Eugenio Hernández Flores was taken into custody by Mexican Marines and turned over to Mexico's Attorney General's Office. A judge ordered Galicia held for 40 days.

Ciudad Victoría, Tamaulipas, Mexico - On Sunday, Egidio Torre Cantú, 53, was declared the winner of the Tamaulipas governorship with 66% of the vote. Cantú the candidate for the Institution Revolutionary Party (PRI) won by 2-1 and 92% of the votes were casted in 8 Tamaulipas municipalities.
Other candidates included, José Julian Sacramento (PAN) received 28% of the votes, both Julio Almanza (PRD) and Armando Vera (PT) received 6% of the vote.
Egidio replaced his late brother Rodolfo Torre Cantú, who was assassinated on June 28, 2010. On June 30, 2010, Egidio was confirmed as the candidate for governor of Tamaulipas by the state PRI party and didn't have time to campaign. But, Egidio vowed to accomplish Rodolfo's campaign promises, if elected.
Egidio wore a bullet proof vest when he voted at the José Vasconcelos elementary school in Ciudad Victoria shortly after it was secured by 50 state and federal police officers. Officers surrounded the school and were stationed on the roof top before Egidio voted. He was accompanied by his wife María del Pilar González de Torre, Laura Graciela de la Garza Montoto, sister in law; Laura Graciela Torre de la Garza, niece and his father Dr. Egidio Torre López.
Egidio is currently a civil engineer, and received a masters degree from the University of Texas. He served as Assistant Attorney General of Tamaulipas and was mayor of Ciudad Victoria from 2000 to 2001.
Cantú will replace outgoing Governor Eugenio Hernández Flores (PRI) who made news on Saturday for hiring an alleged Zeta member Ismael Marino Ortega Galicia, 35, as an escort and bodyguard. Last Saturday, Galicia was taken into custody by Mexican Marines and was being interrogated by the Agency of Special Investigation of Ogranize Crime (SEIDO). He was turned over to the Mexican Attorney General's Office (PGR) in Mexico, if Galicia is found delinquent and connected with organized criminal organizations, he will be prosecuted accordingly, said Ricardo Nájera, Spokesperson for PGR.
A judge ordered Galicia held for 40 days. He was sent to a secure PGR federal detention center pending the outcome of the investigation.
In March, Galicia turned up again in the U.S. Department of Treasury's most wanted poster and in the list of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control. Galicia has a $5 million U.S. bounty by the U.S. government.
Governor Hernández Flores said, Galicia had turned himself in to the PGR twice in 2003 and in 2007, and both times was exonerated and cleared of any criminal activity or association with the Zetas or Gulf Cartels by the PGR for lack of evidence. Galicia after being cleared in 2003 returned to his job as a state preventive police officer, according to Jose Ivez Soberón Tijerina, state Police Chief.
In 2010, Galicia's name and photo appeared in the U.S. Treasury's lists of wanted Zeta and Gulf Cartel members and any of Galicia's assets in the U.S. were sanction by the Treasury.
The U.S. Department Treasury hasn't confirmed, if the Mexican PGR has cleared Galicia and if the U.S. Treasury has cleared him as well.
Galicia as of Monday is still in the most wanted list of the U.S. Treasury and a $5 million dollar reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction is still being offered.
